Have you heard the story of Sweeney Todd? You know, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street? Well, for those of you that love the sad and somewhat disturbing story, ArtsWest (a theater and gallery in West Seattle) just put on a wonderful version of the play with their Musical Theater Apprenticeship Program for young actors ages 16 to 21. And let me tell you, they were amazing! Daniel Schwait, 19, played the role of Sweeney Todd himself, and no one could have asked for a better portrayal of the revenge-obsessed barber. But the acting was not the only impressive thing about this play – who knew there were so many talented young singers out there? Lisa Hill, 21, played the role of Mrs. Nellie Lovett, Sweeney’s accomplice to murder. Her singing was great, and she got quite a few laughs from the audience. But perhaps the most impressive vocalist was Katie Hume, 17, whose sweet and innocent demeanor as Johanna was only reinforced by her soaring soprano. Overall, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street was extremely entertaining. I will look forward to seeing more plays from ArtsWest’s Apprenticeship Program in the future!
