Precious, a heart-wrenching story directed by Lee Daniels, is based on the book Push by Sapphire. This movie won two Oscars for Best Adapted Screen Play and Mo’Nique won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance as Mary, Precious’ abusive mother. The movie shows the struggle of Precious (played by Gabourey Sidibe) a 16-year-old junior high school student living in Harlem during the ’80s. She lives in an abusive home and has gotten pregnant twice by her own father. She had no role models or encouragement until her principal turns her on to an alternative school where she is supported and grows academically and personally. The strength that Precious’ character shows through out the movie is truly inspiring and I would recommend this movie to anyone (assuming you can watch R rated movies).
