Books for the Summer

When people think of things to do over summer break, or any break for that matter, the most common ideas are homework, sleeping, and video games. One thing that I think is a great activity to occupy the long hours of down time is to read. I have some favorite books that I feel everybody should read, and summer break is a great time to do it.

First of all, my all time favorite books are the Bartimaeus Trilogy. These three books, The Amulet of Samarkand, The Golem’s Eye, and Ptolemy’s Gate are written by Jonathan Stroud. These are fantasy books, set in a world where magicians rule, their power derived from demons they summon. This series is fast-paced and exciting, very funny, and immerses you in a highly detailed universe.

The next book I have to recommend is by Ursula Le Guin. It is called The Left Hand of Darkness, and is a sci-fi book. However, before you say that you don’t like sci-fi, you need to read this book. The story follows an emissary to a distant planet, in the middle of an ice age. Filled with political intrigue and amazing characters, this is a must read.

Finally, the last set of books I am recommending is a trilogy by Garth Nix, the Abhorsen trilogy. The books are Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen. Again fantasy books, these are set in a land full of ancient magic, while over a wall a more modern world exists. A story of the battle between the living and the dead, these books contain some of my favorite characters of all time.

The seven books that I have recommended in this post were chosen because they were more than stories to be read, they were each able to make me feel as if I was really there, inside the worlds the author created. These are just a few of the great books that are out there, and are great choices for whenever you are feeling bored or just want to have some fun over summer vacation.

Love the Sabriel trilogy–it’s great to read all three in a row. I’m thinking about reading Nix’s Keys to the Kingdom series this summer, now that all seven are out.
