Author: Ilsa J. Bick
Summary: Alex, a resourceful seventeen-year-old running from her incurable brain tumor, Tom, who has left the war in Afghanistan, and Ellie, an angry eight-year-old, join forces after an electromagnetic pulse sweeps through the sky and kills most of the world’s population, turning some of those who remain into zombies and giving the others superhuman senses.
I started reading it because… I was running out the door to the bus and I needed something to read! But really, who wouldn’t want to read about a world devastated by an EMP (electromagnetic pulse)? Alex is backpacking in the mountains, escaping from the pressures of high school, family and the monster that lives in her head to deal with another issue when the EMP hits. Ellie, an angry young girl, is now Alex’s responsibility and together they have to navigate the forest and find help.
I kept reading because… Despite some of the cliched behavior and hard to believe coincidences, this book drew me in and I lost myself in the story. There are great characters, great dangers and an OMG cliff hanger. I can’t wait for the next book.
