What to read when you’re not watching Game of Thrones…5

Daenerys Targaryen used to have plenty of time to read, back when she lived in Pentos and had little to do other than long for a homeland she’d never seen and wish her creepy brother Viserys would leave her alone. But her life has changed dramatically since then. She’s still trying to find a way to reclaim her throne, but she’s also got a ragtag bunch of Dothraki on her hands, not to mention the dragons no one taught her how to raise and everyone wants to take for themselves. Plus, reading on horseback makes her kind of motion sick. Nevertheless, she wants to be a good queen someday so, in addition to “Westeros for Dummies,” this is what Daenerys Targaryen is reading…

Dragon’s Keep by Janet Lee Carey

Rosalind is also destined to be a queen, but her destiny is derailed when a dragon enters her life, a dragon with whom she shares a strange connection.

Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Both Incarceron and Game of Thrones feature strange and richly imagined worlds with intricate social protocols that harbor dangerous secrets.

Dragonfly by Julia Golding

Like Dani, Tashi is forced into an arranged marriage as part of a political alliance, an arrangement that will lead to danger, adventure, and emotional upheaval.

Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

Neither Dani nor Sorcha is a stranger to family drama, but Sorcha sets out on a difficult quest to save her six brothers, while Dani just wants to get away from the one she has.

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik

More humans connecting with dragons, this one set during an alternate version of the Napoleonic Wars.
