Book Shorts: Torn

TornTitle:  Torn

Author:  Stephanie Guerra

Summary:  High school senior Estelle Chavez’s life in South Bend, Indiana centers on helping her mother raise her younger brother and sister, AP classes, and soccer until a new student, Ruby, draws her into a friendship that includes sneaking out out of the house, dating college boys, and worse.

I started reading it because… it’s a new book with a strong protagonist, who happens to be hapa Latina.

I kept reading because… it was intriguing to see if the main character, Stella Chavez, would make the right decisions about friendships, college and her family.

Main character(s): If they were in a yearbook, they would be voted Most Likely To:
Stella – work with juvenile delinquents
Ruby – create a sensational international clothing line

Six Word Recap:  Hard choices with risky, compelling friends.

This book reminded me of the movie Heathers because of cliques, and bullying; probably appeals to those who enjoyed Mean Girls, too.

Book Trailer:  Stephanie Guerra

Interesting Fact:  Stephanie is local and teaches children’s and teen lit at Seattle U to educators.
