Teen Reviews: A Wizard of Earthsea

Wizard of EarthseaTitle: A Wizard of Earthsea

Author:  Ursula K. Le Guin

Summary:  In an effort to prove his power, an egocentric boy naturally gifted with great magical skill named Ged accidently brings an evil entity into the world of Earthsea from the land of death. It is constantly pursuing him until it can come close enough to take control of his body and being and wreak havoc and chaos on the world. Ged must set out on a quest to stop this shadow and that involves a long journey that has Ged skipping around the many islands of Earthsea.

I started reading it because… I thought that that was quite an interesting idea that Le Guin wrote about an egocentric boy’s journey to becoming a wise wizard instead of the more common story of the wizard doing awesome feats of sorcery when he’s already a wizard.

I kept reading because… I really wanted to find out what Ged does in order to return the shadow back to the land of death.

Main character(s): If they were in a yearbook, they would be voted Most Likely To:  Most likely to do something dumb to prove that he’s better than everyone else.

Six Word Recap:  Egocentric boy becomes a wise wizard.

This book reminded me of The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho because that is also a tale of a boy who gains a lot of wisdom from a long journey.
