What makes this poet so unique? The simple answer is her subject matter. Andrea Gibson was born in August of 1975 and currently lives in Colorado. The majority of Andrea’s subject matter surrounds gender norms, love, politics, and the struggles queer people face in today’s society. Andrea’s work has been a true inspiration to me because of both her unique subject matter and the heart she so evidently pours into her work.
Andrea Gibson is both an activist through her work and an award winner. She placed fourth at the 2004 National Poetry Slam, and she finished third at both the 2006 and 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam. After that in 2008, Gibson became the first poet ever to win the Women of the World Poetry Slam (WOWps) in Detroit.
The thing I like most in Andrea’s work is that it’s both beautiful yet also brutally honest about issues that still plague us today. The way she writes is the way a song would flow if it could shape its own melody chorus by chorus. Her dense yet intriguing metaphors and similies are speckles with intensity that will leave you pondering. I believe that she’s a good poet because of these factors. There are few current day poets that leave me literally musing over the words of their work in awe and I’m proud to say she’s one of them. Here’s an example of Andrea’s work. I hope you have now learned about her just as I did.
