Teen Review: City of Thieves

City of ThievesTitle:  City of Thieves

Author:  David Benioff

Summary:  At the time of the Nazi siege of Leningrad a 17 year-old boy, Lev Beniov, is arrested for looting the corpse of a German paratrooper.  Lev is put into a Russian prison where he meets the extremely cocky, Russian deserter, Kolya.  Lev and Kolya are taken out of the prison by a Russian colonel on the condition that they retrieve a dozen eggs for his daughter’s wedding cake.  Kolya and Lev embark on a dangerous journey behind enemy lines in the middle of the Russian winter to find a dozen eggs in return for their freedom.

I started reading it because… I chose for it for a school project.

I kept reading because… Lev and Kolya are on a non-stop adventure filled with suspense and excitement.  The book was fast paced and kept my interest throughout.

Main character(s): If they were in a yearbook, they would be voted Most Likely To:

Lev: Retire to Southern Florida
Kolya: Succeed

Six Word Recap:  Thrilling quest for eggs, WWII Russia.

This book reminded me of Fourth Uncle In the Mountain by Quang Van Nguyen.  Both stories follow teenage boys during powerful wars and the stories also show the effects war has on all types of people.

Interesting Fact: David Benioff is also a head writer for the show Game of Thrones.  His first novel, The 25th Hour, was produced as a movie of the same name in 2002.
