Storm Front: Book One in the Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher.
I absolutely loved this exciting book Jim Butcher has woven. Think of it as grown up Harry Potter for action hungry teens like me. Harry Dresden (I know right!? HARRY!?) is a Wizard/Private Investigator who helps out the Chicago PD with unexplainable supernatural cases. His ad reads as follows:
HARRY DRESDEN — WIZARD
Lost Items Found. Paranormal Investigations.
Consulting. Advice. Reasonable Rates.
No Love Potions, Endless Purses, Parties or Other Entertainment.
Six Word Review: Wizard fights supernatural crime in Chicago.
I kept reading this because Butcher has wonderfully integrated CSI-like crime investigations with fantasy and supernatural creatures. Dresden encounters vampires, demons, and fairies. I loved the first person narrative of this dashing introvert (who I could relate to quite easily) and his exciting adventures. I always wanted to find out what happened next and the intense action scenes are always spread apart.
If Harry Dresden was on a desert island, he would use magic to escape and be very sarcastic and impatient with whoever he was with.
I give Storm Front 7/10 stars. I wish it was a bit longer and I hope the next books have more mystery. You should know that there was a very well received Dresden files mini-series released in ‘07, and the Seattle Public Library has all of the books and the show in their catalog. Remember: If you need help, call the cops. But if you need a miracle, call Harry Dresden.
