SDB provides a inclusive environment for teen girls. I can honestly say that the supportive and dedicated members of the derby community, skaters and adults alike, have changed my life for the better. I would encourage everyone to get involved in some way.

Movie Review: Whip It!

whip-it-movie-poster

Have you seen Whip It yet? If not, then you should get your butt down to the closest movie theater that is showing it!

This is one of the better movies I have seen in a while, even though it does have its flaws. Notably, it happens to be the first movie that Drew Barrymore has directed. While Barrymore has been involved in the movie industry for most of her life, this is the first time that she has stepped behind the camera; and in my opinion she has managed to make a funny and entertaining first movie. I have been waiting for this movie to come out since its first preview was released on the internet in July and I was not disappointed when I finally got to see it.

The funny and talented cast includes Ellen Page, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Marcia Gay Harden, and Kristen Wiig, plus newcomers Alia Shawkat and Landon Pigg (while you may have heard Pigg’s name before, it’s not because he has been in other movies but because he wrote and sang the 2007 hit song, Falling In Love At a Coffee Shop). The plot was slightly predictable (girl is forced to participate in pageants,  falls in love with roller derby,  joins a team, keeps it a secret from her mom, falls in love with cute musician . . . you can guess what happens next) but none-the-less is very emotional and  touching. You won’t find yourself being bored for even a minute of this movie. While I found the humor to be hilarious, some critics have noted it to be slightly mediocre; you will have to decide for yourself. And, if you happen to be male, you should go see it too; but I’m sorry if you don’t like it as much as I did- it does happen to be aimed at a teen female audience.

So, if you find yourself with some spare time this weekend, I highly recommend that you go and see this movie. It will leave you with a happy feeling; knowing that you didn’t waste your ten dollars, and that you got to experience a touching plot, humor and likable actors for a full 111 minutes!
