Gym Candy – My Favorite Book of All Time

Gym CandyTitle: Gym Candy
Author: Carl Deuker

Summary: Helped by his father to be a star player, football is the only thing that has ever really mattered to Mick Johnson, whose dedication and hard work can get him a spot on the varsity team his freshman year, then tries to hold onto his edge by using steroids, despite the consequences to his health and social life.

Gut reaction: My favorite book of all time.

Why: As an athlete this touches my heart. If you thought steroids make better athletes, then get ready to change your mind. The story never bores you whether the scene is a football game or a simple conversation with Mick and his father.

Who would like this book: People who like football.  And reading about the struggles of an athlete.

Clockwork Angel

If you liked The Mortal Instruments series, then you should also read this book, the first of The Infernal Devices, which has the same concept but is set in 19th century England.  When Tessa Gray’s brother is kidnapped by demons, her paths cross with the Shadowhunters of London, and she learns that she is a Downworlder with an unusual power.  Also, this entire book is steampunk, which is fun.

A Wonderful Trip to DC (Essay)

FeasibleIt was on Friday, May 10th that I participated in the Congressional Art Competition among Seattle Public School students. It was held at the Seattle Art Museum in downtown Seattle. The Competition included elementary and middle school students. When the award ceremony started I felt my heartbeat increase so fast.

I never thought that I’d win first place at the 2013 Art Competition hosted by the SAM. So When I heard my name called I was in complete shock. I couldn’t believe it. I felt like I was dreaming. When Congressman Jim McDermott told me to make a speech, I didn’t even know what to say. I just started thinking about my past, how many things I went through to get here, and that finally it felt like my hard work was starting to pay off.

Because I won first place in the competition I was able to visit Washington DC. to participate in the Congressional High School Art Exhibition (which included districts from all across the country), visit the US Capitol, various museums, memorials, and the White House.

I was so lucky to be able to go to Washington, DC. This was my last chance to participate in Art Competition in High School. I was so excited to go there to represent my school and my district. I am always appreciative of all my teachers at Chief Sealth International High School. They helped me a lot. Because of them I could stay strong and focus on school. Before I went to DC I made good plans to visit every museum with the help of my teacher Ms. Autenrieth. Continue reading
